Blake Swihart Looked Bad In His First Game Off The DL

Blake Swihart played in his first game at AAA Pawtucket this afternoon since July 4th at Rochester. On July 5th he was put on the disabled list with left ankle inflammation. Since August 3rd, he has been with the Gulf Cost League Red Sox where he has had some time at first base. Swihart struggled at the plate with the GCL Red Sox as he only had a .167 average in 30 at bats.

Today, it looked like Swihart should still be on the disabled list. You can see videos of Swiharts’ at bats below. During Swiharts’ first 3 at bats against Clippers starting pitcher Chris Narveson, Swihart struggled. Narveson was able to get Swihart out every time on a change-up. Narveson was using his change-up as his putout pitch. It was clocked at 79-80 mph consistently.

Swiharts’ worst at bat of the day came in the 8th inning. In that at bat, Swihart struck out on 3 pitches. The put away pitch was on an 84 mph curve ball. Swihart who was batting 5th today as the designated hitter didn’t help the Paw Sox win as they went on to lose 5-2.

Swiharts’ At Bats Today

In Swiharts’ first at bat today, he flew out to center field to end the inning. Swihart saw 4 pitches, the put away pitch was a changeup. Swihart was really far in front of the pitch which caused him to hit the soft fly ball to center field.

In Swiharts’ second at bat, he hit a popup to the first basemen Nellie Rodriguez. Swihart saw 5 pitches in the at bat. Again, the put away pitch was a changeup that Swihart was really far in front of it.

In Swiharts’ third at bat on the day, Swihart hit a soft line out to the 2nd basemen Josh Wilson. Swihart saw 3 pitches in the at bat, and he was retired on a changeup once again.

Swiharts’ fourth and final at bat of the day came against Clippers reliever Louis Head. In that at bat, Swihart struck out on 3 pitches. The put away pitch was on a 84 mph curveball down in the dirt. Swihart didn’t have a chance in the at bat. The previous pitch was a fastball up in the zone. Swihart could not catch up to the pitch as he had a swing and a miss on the pitch.
