Boston Celtics Free Agent Big Man Amir Johnson Could Be Heading To A Familiar Team In The Toronto Raptors
Earlier this week, it was rumored that the Toronto Raptors contacted Boston Celtics’s forward Amir Johnson with intensions of signing him this off season. Johnson was the Celtic’s main starting Power Forward this season averaging 6.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and 0.8 bpg. These numbers are pretty low despite the fact that Johnson is a starter.
Even though the numbers do seem low, Amir Johnson does help the Celtics on defense. His big body down below in the post helps Celtics with rebounding and defending the interior. He can also score when necessary. He contributes well to the team.
On the other hand, he seems to have quiet low numbers. He seems to be more of a role player that would be better off coming off the bench versus starting. The Raptors could use Johnson as a back up for Serge Ibaka. This would make the Raptor’s depth on their roster a little bit more dangerous because Ibaka would have a great back up in his place when he needs to sit out during a game. Also Johnson knows how the Raptors because he played for them back in 2009 up until 2013, so it would not be a hard transition.
Overall, this could be a big deal for the Celtics. If they resign him, then they are able to maintain their current depth upon their roster. If he leaves, then Boston will have to look for another great contributor to their roster as far as Power Forwards go. The Toronto Raptors could benefit from Johnson as he would be an ok back up for Ibaka. Now the questions remains: Does Amir Johnson stay or go?
