Boston Celtics No.3 Pick Jayson Tatum Outduels Lakers No.2 Pick Lonzo Ball In Summer League Action From Las Vegas

In front of a rare Las Vegas Summer League sell out crowd the Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 86-81.

The main storyline of this game was the battle between this year’s No.2 and No.3 picks. The No.3 pick, Jayson Tatum had the edge over the No.2 pick, Lonzo Ball.

Tatum led all scorers with 27 points in 33 minutes on the floor. He was 9-of-19 shooting the ball and recorded 11 rebounds. Ball, on the other hand, looked better than his first time out.

The former UCLA standout had a triple-double with 11 pts, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in 34 minutes. One can see how great Lonzo will be. He showed great court vision and the ability to make tough passes. Ball was 5-of-13 shooting.

Tatum’s double-double takes the matchup of picks because he dropped 27 points and was the definition of clutch.

Remind anyone of Paul Pierce?

“He reminds me a lot of Paul Pierce,” Walter McCarty (acting head coach)

With the atmosphere being that of a regular season game or a borderline playoff game, Tatum looked cool as a cucumber.

“It took me back to college,” Jayson Tatum says with a smile of tonight’s atmosphere. “It felt like I was playing at North Carolina.”

Second-year wing Jaylen Brown had a rough outing with 4-of-13 shooting and a -6 +/-. No one had a worse night than Ante Zizic. Zizic was a -15 on the night in only 10 minutes of playing time. Zizic was a literal nonfactor in the game, not good for his chances of making the roster.

Semi Ojeleye, a 2nd round pick this year, had a slow first half but still ended up with 19 points in 29 minutes. Ojeleye was 6-of-13 shooting the ball.

The Boston Celtics have their second Summer League game in Las Vegas on Sunday night against the Portland Trail Blazers on ESPN2 at 8:30 p.m.

PS: Keep an eye out for Abdel Nader. Nader has looked solid in Summer League and a legit ball handler who gets to the rim.
