Boston Celtics Rumor: Stephen A. Smith On First Take Says Boston Will Pursue Chicago Bulls Guard Jimmy Butler

Stephen A. Smith said on “First Take” Monday that the trade between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers that will send the first overall pick to Philly is tied Boston’s pursuit of Bulls forward Jimmy Butler.

Smith said that the Bulls offered Butler to the 76ers in an attempt to acquire the third overall pick in the draft, but that Philadelphia wasn’t interested. Now that Boston has the pick after trading the top selection for No. 3 and a future first, Smith believes the C’s intend to trade for Butler. He added that the Celtics would then sign Gordon Hayward in free agency.

“The Boston Celtics are planning on acquiring Jimmy Butler,” Smith said. “They don’t know if they’ll be able to, but their hope is they’ll be able to use the No. 3 pick, get themselves Jimmy Butler, go into free agency, get Gordon Hayward, and then combine Butler with Hayward, keeping Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley and those boys in tow, and making a legitimate run at the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Eastern Conference crown knowing that they then get to come back the following year and likely get another first-round pick on top of the one that they will have, etc. etc.

“So that’s their belief right now for the Boston Celtics, the No. 3 pick, worst-case scenario that they find themselves in a position to draft somebody like a Josh Jackson out of Kansas, but the hope is that they’ll be able to use the No. 3 pick to get their hands on Jimmy Butler. They believe they’ve got a better shot than anybody at getting Gordon Hayward from Utah to come and play for his old college coach at Butler, Mr. Brad Stevens, and as a result, the combination of those two additions to the squad along with keeping the nucleus of their team intact will make them on par, at least in most folks’ eyes, to legitimately compete with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Eastern Conference crown again.”

The play of Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward will not make or break this Celtics team. Everyone knows that they’ll perform. No it’s the ancillary characters, those hard-nosed guys who have been placed on the backburner, that will make the difference for Boston during the upcoming 2017-18 season.

This past summer was charged with controversy and pandemonium, following some massive moves made by Danny Ainge and his subordinates. Dishing out well-groomed fan favorites to teams manifold, Boston felt like the nexus of offseason activity in the NBA.

Many Celtics fans still harbor some reproach, regarding the unfamiliarity of this team. But I assure you that there is still exists that “Tommy Point” foundation, which the Celtics will look to for a foothold when the going gets tough. These are the individuals that will dictate the trajectory of this team’s season.

TV And Live Stream Info: Boston Celtics Kick Off Season In Cleveland

Boston Celtics

One of the most interesting sports teams in the City of Boston over the last couple of months has been the Boston Celtics. They have been this without even playing a single regular season game. But that all changes on Tuesday night in Cleveland.

The reason for this interestingness that surrounds them is simple. The NBA offseason.

In the offseason, the Boston Celtics made a flurry of deals and signings highlighted by the drafting of Jayson Tatum, the signing of Gordon Hayward, and the trade for Kyrie Irving. These three moves highlighted an offseason for Danny Ainge that could go down in history. With only Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, and Jaylen Brown returning to the team it looks to be a very different Celtics team on and off the court.

Heading into their regular season opener on Tuesday night they are one of the favorites to win it all. But before they win a championship they will need to prove that they can play well together and compete against the leagues best. Fortunately for Coach Stevens and the Celtics, they will have an opportunity to get a look at the leagues best to open the season.

With the C’s playing the Cavaliers comes a number of storylines, but here are the best.

  • Irving’s return to Cleveland
  • Irving v. LeBron James
  • Isaiah Thomas against the Celtics
  • Chemistry between the Celtics starting five
  • How will Stevens use his new players and what will the rotations look like.
  • Cavs vs Celtics

The last point is the most important one of them all. When it comes down to it these two teams, in theory, are the best in the Eastern Conference. They will likely have plenty of battles over the course of the NBA season and could be the two teams that make it to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Whatever happens for the 2018 Celtics starts on Tuesday at 8 pm, but for now, it is shaping up to be a memorable and exciting season in Boston.
