Boston Red Sox Call Up Maddox And Holt, Hoyer On DL
Boston Red Sox have made a flurry of moves ahead of Sunday’s doubleheader with the New York Yankees.
Just a day after placing Joe Kelly on the DL Boston has placed veteran Blaine Boyer on the DL with an elbow injury. Boyer had pitched one inning on Saturday night. But when he went out to start his second inning of relief the players called the trainer and coaching staff out to look at him.
At the time it wasn’t clear what the injury was, but being an elbow injury, Boyer could be out for awhile.
This season for the Boston Red Sox Boyer has a 3.00 ERA in 24 innings pitched.
The corresponding move for Boyer being placed on the DL is the call-up for relief pitcher Austin Maddox from AAA-Pawtucket. This is Maddox’s second call-up on the season. In his first call-up, he appeared in 2 games with 2 innings of work without allowing an earned run.
Maddox has split his time in the minors with Pawtucket and Double-A Portland where he started the season. Combined he pitched 34.1 innings with a 2.36 ERA with opponents batting .190 off the right hander.
In addition to Maddox getting called up. The Red Sox have activated utility infielder Brock Holt of the DL as the 26th man. Boston is allotted a 26th player due to Sunday’s double header.
