Boston Red Sox Option First Basemen Sam Travis And Reliever Brandon Workman, In Exchange They Have Activated Second Baseman Dustin Pedroia And Add Starting Pitcher Brian Johnson

Ahead of Friday nights series opener against the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox have made a flurry of roster moves to prepare themselves for the series.

With starting pitcher Brian Johnson slated to start for Boston on Friday night,  the Red Sox optioned reliever Brandon Workman to AAA-Pawtucket. Workman has been up and down from Pawtucket several times this season, his most recent call-up date was on June 2nd.

In this past call-up stint, Workman appeared in one game which came on June 8th where he went 2.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Workman is headed back to Pawtucket where in 9 appearances this season holds an impressive 1.72 ERA.

The other move that came on Friday was the activation of second baseman Dustin Pedroia who is coming off the 10-day-dl with an wrist injury. The corresponding move for Boston is optioning first baseman Sam Travis who was called up on May 23rd and went 8-for-17 in Boston with two doubles in limited plate appearances.

It is unclear if Johnson will only be up for one start, but signs are pointing towards a roster more following his start to add depth to the bullpen.
