Boston Red Sox Pitching Depth Looks More Promising with Hector Velazquez Passing Henry Owens

Hector Velazquez showed some promise in his 1st professional start tonight for the Pawtucket Red Sox tonight. He went 4.2 innings on 4 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts on 79 pitches (52 strikes).

The biggest take away from tonight for Velazquez was that he was pounding the strike zone, something that Henry Owens has struggled with. For a player who is pitching in the minor leagues, you’re not looking at results. You’re looking to see if they can keep their team in the game and pound the strike zone.

It looks like Velazquez can do that in professional baseball. I can confidently say that he has passed Henry Owens on the depth chart for the Boston Red Sox in the starting pitching department. The main reason I say that is Velazquez can throw strikes.

To compare Velazquez to a player you have already seen in a Red Sox uniform, it would be Sean O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan could give you 5 innings of quality ball and keep you in the game. The both relied on control and pounding the strike zone. Once they begin to lose it, they would be hit hard. When you’re throwing around 92-93 that is going to happen.

Kyle Kendrick is the 1st pitcher the Red Sox are going to call up if someone can’t make a start in Boston but as of June 15th he can opt out of his contract. If he opts out, the 1st pitcher the Red Sox call up from AAA Pawtucket might be Hector Velazquez assuming that David Price isn’t back in the rotation. Otherwise it will be Drew Pomeranz.

Red Sox Continue To Be Cryptic On David Price

The Boston Red Sox have been very cryptic on the status of pitcher David Price. Price has been on the DL for quite some time now after initially shrugging the injury off claiming it wasn’t anything serious.

But in the last couple of weeks the Red Sox and John Farrell, in particular, have been very secretive and unsure of his status. The issue is, the opportunity for a rehab start isn’t looking realistic. Price has yet to throw off a mound and with the minor league seasons starting to close in the coming weeks, Price’s season may be done.

Farrell made a comment ahead of Wednesday nights game with the Indians where he claims he is being “realistic”.

I don’t know if I was pessimistic. I think I was just being realistic with that he was currently involved in when you realistically look at the calender and then what the progression is needed to get back to that. I’m not ruling it out, but I think at the same time being realistic.

“Untill he gets on a mound, that’s when we’ll start to get a better idea of connecting to the end date”.

Price remains on the 10-day-dl which he was placed on July 28th with left elbow inflammation. He has been able to throw off of flat ground, but the mound is still an obstacle he has yet to face.

Price has a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts for Boston this season with 66 innings pitched. Right now, it is fair to question why the Boston Red Sox and Price didn’t opt for Tommy John Surgery when this issue first kicked up back in Spring Training.

Pawtucket Red Sox Lose 6-2 To Bisons Despite Good Start By Elias

The Pawtucket Red Sox dropped game 2 of their 4 game series with the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night 6-2 at McCoy Stadium. There were 6,502 fans at McCoy Stadium tonight.

Roenis Elias Pitched much better then what his pitching line showed. He gave up 4 runs in 7 innings, but it should have only been 2 run. Elias was also pretty close to doing something that Craig Kimbrel and Rick Porcello have done this season.

The Paw Sox saw all of their offense from a two run home run from Matt Dominguez in the 4th inning. It was a home run that barley got out of the park.
