Boston Red Sox Recall Starting Pitcher Hector Velazquez From Pawtucket And Option Infielder Deven Marrero
The Red Sox needed a fresh arm in the bullpen after relievers were used for six innings on Tuesday night and 22-1/3 innings over five games during the homestand. Based on that it is being presumed that Velazquez will be used out of the bullpen for Boston.
For Pawtucket this season Velazquez is 4-1 with a 1.29 ERA and has had opponents bat .189 against him in nine starts for the PawSox. The 28-year-old righty made one start this season for Boston and it came on May 18th in Oakland where he allowed six runs over five innings pitched and suffered a loss.
Marrero in this past Major League stint did not provide much offense for Boston with a .147 avg and a .497 OPS. So far for Boston this season he has started 23 games this season for Boston and in that timeframe the Red Sox have gone 15-8. Marrero’s defense is the rated the best in the entire Red Sox organization but his offense leaves much more desired and on Tuesday Red Sox manager John Farrell made it clear the third base job is Josh Rutledge‘s right now with Pablo Sandoval coming off the bench.
Marrero has also played 19 games with the PawSox this season, going 12-for-71 (.169) with four runs, three doubles, and four RBI. With Velazquez being called up as a fresh arm there is a real possibility that Marrero will be right back up with the big team within a week.
