Boston Red Sox Roll The Dice And Shakeup Roster With Team Fluttering
With the Boston Red Sox looking lost at the plate and falling to 11-10 on the season many are trying to not overreact. But team President Dave Dombrowski is not waiting around for the team to come around, instead, DD is being proactive and making roster moves ahead of his team’s weekend series with the defending World Series champions.
With the Cubbies coming into town Dombrowski has added utility player Chase d’Arnaud to the active 25-man roster and recalled right-handed pitcher Ben Taylor from Triple-A Pawtucket. The corresponding moves are optioning left-handed reliever Robbie Ross Jr. and utility player Steve Selsky to Pawtucket.
d’Arnaud was a waiver claim by Boston on Thursday after being released by the Atlanta Braves. With Chase he can play all over the field and was on Atlanta’s Opening Day roster and appeared in 11 games with one start for the Braves. During that time he was 3-8 with two walks. He is 30-years-old and has played for three National league teams during his career, the Pirates, Phillies, and the Braves.
He has a .231 career batting average, however last year in Atlanta he batted .245 in 262 plate appearances, both were career highs. d’Arnaud also brings the ability to play everywhere on the field except 1B and C, interestingly enough the move leaves the Boston Red Sox even more vulnerable at first with Selsky being able to play 1B and D’Arnaud not being able to.
Robbie Ross going down is not a shocker as in 21 games so far this season he has appeared in just four games for John Farrell giving up two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Without Ross, the Red Sox bullpen has two lefties remaining with Robbie Scott and Fernando Abad.
Taylor has seen time this season for Boston already with 4 appearances giving up one run on four hits with three walks and 7 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. His biggest appearance of the season came in a long relief role where he pitched a sensational 3 2/3 innings giving up just one run coming in for Steven Wright who couldn’t get out of the second inning.
With nothing working well right now these two moves could provide the much-needed spark to kick this Boston Red Sox team into high gear.
