Boston Sports Trifecta, Bruins, Sox, Patriots All Playing

Published

on

A Trifecta will occur on Thursday. Three Boston sports teams will be playing huge games all on the same day. A feat that doesn’t occur all the time. Sometimes you will get two big games going on the same day, but three? Almost unheard of.

The three games are as follows:

Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros, ALDS Game 1, 4:08 pm on MLB Network (WTF)

Boston Bruins vs Nashville Predators, Regular Season Opener, 7:00 pm on  NESN

New England Patriots at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pivotal Week 5 game, 8:25 pm on CBS, NFL Network, Amazon

All three games are important. You could debate which one is actually the most important as crazy as it sounds. The Red Sox are playing game 1 of their postseason. But a game 1 loss isn’t a big deal for them. Since it is a 5 game series you really only need to win one of the first two games before heading home to Fenway.

But with Chris Sale on the mound, the Red Sox would like to get a win to start off their series.

The Boston Bruins game kicks of their 2017 campaign that has so many question marks. With such a young team getting a win to start off the season is huge. But admittedly it is the least important game of the day between the three teams. The most important is a week 5 game for the Patriots.

New England enters week 5 2-2 and in third place in the AFC East behind the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills. Tampa is a tough opponent with an elite offense led by Jameis Winston. They will see the return of Doug Martin and have one of the best 1-2 receiving punches in football with Desean Jackson and Mike Evans.

Tampa Bays offense will pose a tough battle for a Patriots defense that ranks dead last in the NFL in multiple key categories including pass defense. A Patriots loss could be devastating to the franchise and their future.

When it comes down to it there are three important games for fans to watch and the time of the starts allow fans of all three teams the opportunity to watch some of each game. My prediction? A complete sweep for all three teams.

Connelly’s Top Ten: Patriots Get Smoked

Published

on

Patriots

1.Kickoff
*Team looked content to show up and get ready for next Sunday

*Not good that they were out-toughed

*Duron Harmon yelling at the defense close to hitting Matt Patricia with his flailing arms

*Patriots played like they didn’t want to show Pittsburgh anything

2. Brady

*Remember last year Brady had the first four games off – is he hitting a wall – last two games – 1 TD to 3 INT

*Looked indifferent

*Was off all game
*Took another beating
*Brady completes pass to Cooks with 2:17 left in game and couldn’t hustle team up for snap before two minute warning

3. Offense

*I don’t get it – no hurry up at all – Miami is getting off on the snap – why not run them off the field

*Cooks got his ass kicked the entire game – he didn’t win or compete all night

*Offensive Line over matched

*Running back touches – Burkhead 10 / Lewis 10 / White 3
*Hogan rushed back – if that’s the effort the team is going to put in – just sit him out for Pittsburgh

4. Defense

*Miami did what every team should have done after the Carolina game – run confusing sets and stack receivers and make the secondary decipher who has who

*Secondary- Butler beaten often (could have been worse if not for drops)/ Gilmore chasing across the field / Rowe only show up

*Roberts shooting the wrong gaps on rush defense and lost in coverage

*At one point – linebackers was Freeney and Reilly – they wouldn’t start in the college football playoffs

*Richards missing one on one sack with freakin’ Jay Cutler

*Chung got 360 spinned by Drake

*Amendola and Cooks had as many tackles as Malcom Brown

5. New England fans go to Miami – it was cold, they spent money, they had to listen to Miami fans, they are hung over, they have to fly home to winter

6. Bill Garb and Kraft Sighting

  • Bill with cutoff gray hoodie
  • Kraft with 10:58 left in third quarter / 12:08 left in fourth quarter

7. Injuries

*Offense – No Edelman, Gronk, Waddle, Cannon, Bennett, Mitchell

*Defense – No Hightower, Van Noy, McClellin, Flowers, Langi

*Special Teams – Ebner,

8. Special Teams

*Worst on side kick in football history

*Hold on punt in 4th quarter cost the Patriots game – they go from midfield to their own 15

9. Just a Little Bit Outside

*Tuukaa Rask led Bruins only local team with a winning streak

10. Randomocity

*Patriots get screwed by scheduler this year – they play on Monday night away – then they have to travel home and then travel Sunday to play the biggest game of the year

*Sidenote -Michael Wilbon didn’t say anything about a cheap shot by Michael Bennett of Seattle being racist after going at white players knees during the kneel down at the end of the Seattle game
*How about Phil Castinetti of Sports World getting Stan Jonathan and Pierre Bouchard together at Sports World in Saugus

Connelly’s Top Ten – Are You Ready For Some Football!

Published

on

1.Patriots vs. Miami

* Head to Head Patriots are 51-53

* By Decade 60’s 3-4 / 70’s 7-13 / 80’s 11-10 / 90’s 7-14 / 00’s 12-9 / 10’s 12-3

* Patriots were on an 0-16 streak in the Orange Bowl when they Squished the Fish

* Brady is 7-7 in Miami / Cassel is 1-0

* Brady’s first game lost 30-10 / he was 12-24 for 86 yards with 4 sacks

Monday night football in Miami brings back memories of John Smith kicking and Howard Cosell announcing John Lennon was dead (not to be confused his drooling over Russ Francis- Cosell not Lennon)

* Night game in Miami – Pats fans drinking all day – over under on fights in the crowd 77

* Who has a dirtier shot – Alonso or Suh (and don’t sleep on Wake he likes put his weight into Brady on the ground)

2. Around the NFL

* Wow Red Zone

* Really – CBS gives us Giants vs. Cowboys instead of Jimmy G who is now 5-0 as a starter

* Is this the time of the year that NFL coaches are piling on weight – long season, long film sessions, lots of snacking

* Anyone see Adam Vinatieri kick a 43-yard extra point in the snow – bringing back memories

3. Local teams last ten games:

* Patriots……9-1

* Bruins………8-2

* Celtics……..8-2

4. Patriots are 12-0 over the last two seasons without Gronk:

5. What’s ruining each sport:

Basketball – three pointers, officials (Celtics and Detroit shot 21-63 Sunday night)

Hockey – goalie equipment, blocked shots, they don’t promote their sport

Baseball – Game times, strikeouts

Football – Pass interference, commercials

Soccer – offsides outside of the box, theatrics in diving (should be post game review and yellow cards)

Tennis – rackets are too powerful – too many points off serve

Golf – Clubs are too powerful making the game just driver, wedge, putter – very little skill and strategy

6. People are already comparing the Stanton trade by Jeter to the Yankees to the McHale trade of Garnett to Boston – BUT – I think people undervalue Al Jefferson in this deal:

Garnett with Boston………….6,233 points / 3,301 rebounds

Al Jefferson after Boston….12,117 points / 6,627 rebounds

7. Amazing Stats – MT Union Football crazy record:

* Haven’t lost more than one game in a season since 1994

* Record since 262-9

* Twelve DIII championships

* 14-0 this year going for another championship

8. Old School – I love that the Yankees got Stanton – 2017 strikeouts (including Stanton) vs. 1950 Yankee strikeouts (top nine batters in at bats):

·         1950 (303 K in 4,085 at bats – one every 13.5 at bats) – Rizzuto 39 / Berra 12 (!) / DiMaggio 33 / Coleman 38 / Woodling 31 / Bauer 41 / Mapes 61 / Billy Johnson 30 / Brown 18

·         2017 – (1,085 K in 4,422 at bats one every 4.07 at bats) – Gardner 122 / Stanton 163 / Judge 208 / Gregorius 70 / Headley 132 / Sanchez 120 / Castro 93 / Holliday 114 / Ellsbury 63

9. Just a Little Bit Outside – Year Christmas specials were first introduced:

*Christmas Carol……….1951 Alastair Sims movie (1843 -published)

* Wonderful Life………..1946

* Grinch……………………..1966

* Rudolph…………………..1964

* Frosty……………………..1969

* The Christmas Story..1983

* Christmas Vacation….1989

10. Randomocity

*I think the Queen TV series on Netflix is the best quality show ever broadcast

* I finally finished the four-hour Tom Petty documentary on Netflix – you forget how many hits he had (Not as good as the Eagles four hour documentary or the Jimmy Iovine documentary)

* I’m still shocked that there isn’t a great seafood restaurant in Boston (closest is Turner’s in Melrose)

* Great win for Boston College hoops – first victory over a ranked team in 24 tries – football team is 0-11 (side note they couldn’t have had worse uniforms)

* Not quite Tom Harmon parachuting into WWII – The Heisman Trophy was won by a guy that over the last nine months was arrested for resisting arrest and had his captaincy stripped by his coach

* How cool were the Army Mountaineer uniforms in the snow (not great for TV though)

3. Teams the Patriots have an under .500 record against since 1960:

8. Old School – Football Violence:

* “Brutality and foul play should receive the same summary punishment given to a man who cheats at cards or who strikes a foul blow in boxing” President Teddy Roosevelt

* In 1909 and 1910, 52 players DIED in football

* At Staunton College in 1909 – running back Edward Schmidt was tackled after a twenty-yard run – he told the other players, “I can’t see you any more – I’m dizzy”. He was taken by a buggy to a doctor’s office but died on the way – his teammates took off their shirts and lit them on fire and then the goal posts.

* 1909 injury reports following implementation of safety rules in college football: 65 broken collar bones, 40 broken legs, 37 broken noses, 30 broken ribs, 20 broken ankles, 17 broken fingers, 13 broken shoulders, 11 broken wrists

* Never forget – Pearl Harbor attack began at 7:55 / the first plane on 9/11 took off from Boston at 7:59

* How long before ISIS claims responsibility for the LA fires

* Anyone injecting the race card in the Gronk hit is actually guilty of racism because they are responsible for stoking fires for their own personal benefit and quest for attention

* Speaking of that – interesting words chosen by Buffalo players that the “Hood” is going to go after Gronk – code word perpetuating racist snowball

* Jimmy G playing well is actually hurting Pats draft position on the pick they got

* A football player will die on national television in the next two years
