Celtics Summer League: Tatum Real Deal, Brown Showed Major Growth
In the first game of the NBA Summer League on Monday, the Boston Celtics took down the Philadelphia 76’ers behind a game winner by Jayson Tatum.
This year’s No.3 overall pick hit the game-winning shot with 5.7 seconds to go and finished the night with 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting. Tatum also added 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.
The Celtics coach for summer league action is Jerome Allen, and he had nothing but praise for Tatum post-game.
“He kind of has an old soul.”- Said Jerome Allen on Tatum after the game.
In terms of the last shot, Allen said the plan the whole time was feeding Tatum. Because he “knew he’d make the right basketball play.”
Another star on the night for the Boston Celtics was second-year player Jaylen Brown. Brown scored a game-high 29 points on the night and added 13 rebounds. Brown was an efficient shooter on the night making 10-of-16 shots including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Brown’s shot from three was smooth as silk on Monday.
“It was just his posture…it was like water flowing.” said Allen
Celtic big man Ante Zizic whose main goal will be to collect rebounds managed to scrap together 5 boards against the Sixers. Another prospect who played well was Abdel Nader who was 6-of-11 shooting the ball with 7 rebounds and 13 points for Boston.
The big storyline from this game was the battle between Tatum and No.1 overall pick Markelle Fultz. Fultz went 6-of-16 shooting with 17 points on the night. But his +/- was a brutal -12 compared to a +7 for Tatum.

This matchup will likely be well documented for years to come with Danny Ainge trading the No.1 pick to Philly for the No.3 pick and future firsts. But through round 1, it looks like Tatum has the edge.
