US Open Talk: It Was Another Close Round at Erin Hills
Yesterday at the US Open left us with our hands to our mouths as the Leaderboard changed several times. There were some incredible shots one in particular was Justin Thomas’ Eagle Putt on 18. With that Putt he became the only Golfer to ever score -9 for a single Round of the US Open.
It was an incredible day for him and he finished his round in Lead at the time at -11 for the Championship, 63 on the day. Wow what a fantastic day of Golf it was.
The Greens were a little wet from the other night’s rain. The wind really died down so that the Greens were in striking distance. I’d have to say yesterday’s conditions were the best by far for the players. I mean seriously, Eagle Putts on Par 5’s, come on man, that’s just crazy!
As crazy as that sounds there were 14 Players who were vying for the Lead. There actually was a 7 Player Tie for 1st at one time. One of those players was Ricky Fowler who made an incredible Putt on the 15th making a Birdie. In fact he made 3 Birdies in a row, the 14th, 15th, and 16th. Fowler finished the day -11 Tied for 2nd.
The big surprise yesterday was how well the Field played. Brian Harman played well and finished with the Lead, -12 for the Championship. Brooks Koepka who had an Eagle Putt robbed from him on the 14th. He shot -11 for the Tournament. Then there was Tommy Fleetwood who was all over the Green. He made some incredible Putts but lost his nerve at the 18th. He finished the day -11. Look out cause this Major really is up for grabs! Anyone of these guys can pull away from the Field and put it away.
The Front 9 has the easiest Holes and with the conditions they way they were, everyone was making Birdies on them. Look for the same to be true today as the US Open finishes today, Round 4, on Fox. I think that it will be a close one with Fowler, Harman, Koepka, and Fleetwood in the mix.
I believe though that this is the time and place, ‘the moment’ if you will for Fowler to really show that he has what it takes to win a Major. He’s the fan favorite, but can he do it? That question will be answered today.
