The Feud, The Fuel, The Win. The Drama at Watkins Glen

NASCAR: Feud Continues As Truex JR Wins Drama at the Glen

The drama never stops for these two drivers and the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series’ I Love New York 355 had plenty of drama to go around.

Kyle Busch was heard using a few choice curse words for Brad Keselowski at the race on Sunday at Watkins Glen. Brad spun out pole sitter Kyle Busch in Stage 1.

Brad Keselowski took the lead from Martin Truex Jr but fuel played its role before the green flag dropped and Truex Jr got his first career victory at Watkins Glen.

Truex Jr now has four victories on the season. He leads the playoff standings by 18 points over second-place driver Jimmie Johnson, and the overall series lead by 116 points over Busch.

Danica Patrick spun out on a late restart and Dale Earnhardt Jr was out due to engine trouble. This was Earnhardt Jr’s last trip to the Glen. He retires after this season.

Keselowski took the lead from Martin Truex Jr late in the race and then ran out of fuel. Ryan Blaney then had the lead and he ran out of fuel. Martin Truex Jr, who hit pit road late in the day for gas, had a tight finish fighting off Matt Kenseth for the trip to victory lane.

I’m kind of speechless. I really didn’t think it was going to play out there,” Truex told NBCSN afterward, in reference to the fuel-conservation strategy.

Crew chief Cole Pearn assured Truex Jr. via the radio both those cars would have to pit for fuel. Truex Jr, on the other hand, could make it to the end if he was careful.

“It was so stressful to let guys go by for the lead. I’ve never had to do that before… You’ve just got to listen to your crew chief,” Truex Jr said.
