New England Patriots Rumor: Julian Edelman Signs Contract Extension
Julian Edelman has been a key part of the New England Patriots offense ever since the departure of Wes Welker. Edelman has grinded and does anything that is asked of him, including playing defense when his roster spot was in jeopardy. Now as a receiver Edelman has become Tom Brady‘s favorite option in the passing game. Edelman was set to be a free agent after this upcoming season, but now it is looking like Brady and the offense will have JE11 for an extended period of time.
According to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Patriots and Edelman are moving toward a contract extension that should be completed in the next day or so.
As of right now Edelman is slated to earn $3 million in base salary in 2017, but this number is likely to change if and when a contract extension is signed. Julian Edelman is 31-years-old and appeared in all 16 games last season for the Patriots which was only the second time in his career that he played a full season.
Once again Edelman was a key cog in the offense reigning in 98 catches, 1,106 yards, and three touchdowns for the New England Patriots.
Based on productivity, Edelman has been grossly underpaid by the Patriots in his career, this might change with this projected contract extension. But we cannot be sure on the terms of the contract until it is officially signed in the next couple of days.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirms the two sides have in fact reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension keeping him in New England through 2019.
