New England Patriots: The Super Bowl winning season that almost didn’t happen

By Christian Bullock

With a loose handshake from [Commissioner] Roger Goodell and a jeer from the crowd {Patriots Owner] Robert Kraft exclaimed “This one is the sweetest!”  [Quarterback] Tom Brady was suspended this year for four games.  Yet as the confetti flew in the stadium, it looked like just another Patriots Super Bowl run.

Just like other Patriot Super Bowl’s there were circus catches and stunning comebacks.  Yet during the off season Brady was embroiled in a costly suspension.  There were “Free Brady” chants all year and a question of whether Brady still had the stuff.  It looked improbable that the Patriots could make a Super Bowl run without him.

Growing up in New England I spent countless hours going threw Sports Page clippings on Patriots Football.  While my friends were taping swimsuit models to the walls of their bedrooms, I was posting Patriot articles on the walls of mine.  I followed the highs and lows of each season and I had plenty to talk about with my Pop Warner Team.  This year was like no other.  I followed the outrageous deflate-gate suspension and felt the impact it had on my Fantasy Football Team.  You guessed it, I had Brady and I couldn’t believe that he’d be on the bench for five weeks.  It looked improbable that he would be on par with his yearly performance.  But this was a season of improbable comebacks.

The Pats back up Quarterbacks kept the team in the winning average, something that we have come to expect from a [Coach] Bill Belichick team.  Yet the need for the experienced Brady was great.  The Team needed him at the right moment and guess what?  He came back better than ever.  With a few historic records and the nickname “the Goat”, Tom Brady proved to the critics that the improbable was possible.

The Super Bowl was a clear example of this.  It is the Patriot way; the Belichick way; the Brady way.  The improbable is possible when Tom Brady is in the backfield.  And the Fourth Quarter comeback was real.  [Commissioner] Roger Goodell would have to present the Lombardi Trophy to the Patriots who he had been feuding with for the past two years.  As [Owner] Robert Kraft said after the game “This one is the sweetest”, yes Mr. Kraft, yes it is.  And like it or not, guess what?  We love watching [Quarterback] Tom Brady play.
