Robert Kraft Now Owns an Esports Team in Boston
Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, is now the owner of another team. On Wednesday, the Kraft Group was part of an announcement for the Overwatch League, which bills itself as the “first major global professional esports league.”
The popularity of esports has exploded in recent years and the new league that Kraft is backing will be centered around the game “Overwatch,” a first-person shooter from Blizzard, that features rounds of various colorful heroes and villains going to battle in arena-style matches.
“Overwatch” is a multi-player shooter in the same vein of “Halo” or “Goldeneye” — only it has a lot more zany powers and abilities such as: running on the walls, jetpacks, creating pillars of ice, hacking your opponents and smashing people with a giant hammer.
“We have been exploring the esports market for a number of years and have been waiting for the right opportunity to enter,” Kraft said in a statement. “The incredible global success of Overwatch since its launch, coupled with the League’s meticulous focus on a structure and strategy that clearly represents the future of esports made this the obvious entry point for the Kraft Group.”
Boston will have one of the first seven teams for the Overwatch League. The other six teams in the global league will be New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami-Orlando, Shanghai, and Seoul. Each team costs a reported $20 million franchise fee paid over time. Games for the league’s first season, slated to start later this year, will be played in a Los Angeles arena.
