Patriots Talk: Gilmore Getting Acclimated In New England
The New England Patriots made a big splash this offseason. That splash was signing free agent corner Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore comes to the Patriots after starting his career with the Buffalo Bills. Gilmore experienced a different atmosphere than he is used to on Day 1 of training camp.
“Yeah, it’s crazy. There are a lot of people here, great fans and great support.”
One thing that is critical to Gilmore’s success is adjusting to Matt Patricia’s defensive scheme. Something he is taking day-by-day.
“I’m getting better and better every day trying to learn the calls and learn the scheme. OTA’s and minicamp helped me out a lot. [It’s] the first day of training camp, I feel more comfortable, so I’m just trying to get better every day.”
The Patriots receiving corps is one of the best ones in the league. Players like Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski poise a tough challenge for Gilmore. Practicing against them helps him get better as well as help them improve.
“There are a lot of good receivers that make me better. I’m trying to make them better. We’re just trying to compete against each other and have a good day.”
For now though, Gilmore is focused on getting used to the different calls and names that go along with it. His fellow defensive ends are helping him through it to ensure a smooth transition into the Patriots secondary.
“It’s cool. They talk with me all the time. They help me along the way. Some of the calls are different, different names, so I’m getting used to it and they’re helping me along the way.”
