Paw Sox Beat Bulls Behind 3 Home Runs
This afternoon, the Paw Sox and the Durham Bulls played the third game of their four game series. The Paw Sox took the 1st two games of the series. In game one they won 5-4 in 12 innings on a Bryce Brentz walk off single. In game two, they won 6-2 behind 7 strong innings from Héctor Velázquez. This afternoon, Henry Ownes pitching against Brent Honeywell.
Henry Ownes was making his 9th start of the season for the Paw Sox. Coming into the game, he was 3-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 42.1 innings. Brent Honeywell is 3-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 39 innings. The interesting thing with Honeywell is he’s one of the last pitchers out there that has screwball.
Bulls Scoring On The Afternoon
The 1st inning from Owens was typical Owens. He began the game with a 5 pitch walk to Mallex Smith. Following the walk, he stole 2nd base to put himself into scoring position. Then with two outs, Mike McKenry hit a sharp single to left field to drive in Smith to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Paw Sox Offense
In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Paw Sox came back with to blow this game open early against the 25th best prospect in baseball according to mlb.com. It began with four straight singles by Rusney Castillo, Blake Swihart, then Ryan Court who drove in Castillo to tie the game at 1. To continue the rally, Brian Bogusevic then hit another single to load the bases with no outs. Then on the first pitch to Steve Selsky, he drove it into the Paw Sox bullpen to give the Paw Sox a 5-1 lead with no outs in the 1st inning. That would be all the offense in the 1st inning for the Paw Sox.

In the 2nd inning, the Paw Sox struck again off the bat of Rusney Castillo. Castillo hit his 7th home run of the season right down the right field line, into the Bulls bullpen. After back to back strike outs for Honeywell, Brian Bogusevic had a bid for the Paw Sox third home run of the afternoon. He hit a hard hit ball that went to the wall in left field for an out.

In the 3rd inning, the Paw Sox hit their 3rd home run of the day to lead off the inning. Steve Selsky, hit his second home run of the day into the right-center field bleachers to give the Paw Sox a 7-1 lead. Later in the inning, Allen Craig had his first hit on the afternoon, a double down the left field line. But Craig would be left at 2nd base as Honeywell got Matt Dominguez and Mike Miller to fly out. That ended the day for Honeywell. His final pitching line was 3 innings, giving up 8 hits, 7 runs, 1 walk, 3 K’s and 3 home runs on 69 pitches (47 strikes).
After Honeywell’s departure from this ballgame, Austin Pruitt came in for the Bulls to settle things down which saved their bullpen. He went 3 innings, giving up no hits and had 3 K’s on 38 pitches (27 strikes). The Bulls bullpen pitched very well this afternoon, giving up only 2 hits in 5 innings of work.
Henry Owens pitched well for the Paw Sox this afternoon, despite his control problems. He went 6 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 7 K’s on 110 pitches (63 strikes) which lowered his ERA on the season to 2.98. After Owens left the game today, Edgar Olmos closed out the game while pitching 3 innings, giving up 3 hits, 1 walk, and 4 K’s. His work earned him the save.
Henry Owens got the win today, improving his record to 4-3, and Brian Honeywell got the loss which lowered his record to 3-5 on the season with AAA Durham. This extended the Paw Sox winning streak to four games as they improved their record to 20-24 on the season. They will look to get the sweep on Monday afternoon at 1:35pm as they send Shawn Haviland to the mound.
