Paw Sox Lose 6th Straight Game After Bullpen Implodes In The 9th Inning
Paw Sox lost their 6th straight game on Wednesday night 6-3 to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs at McCoy Stadium. This is the second longest losing streak for the Paw Sox on the season. In mid May, they had a 9 game loosing streak from May 10th to the 19th.
The Paw Sox offense finally woke up in the 3rd inning tonight. That was thanks to a Ryan Court home run into the berm in left center field to give the Paw Sox a 2-1 lead. The runner on base was thanks to a base hit from Rusney Castillo. But he came out of the game with groin tightness after he reached 1st base. This was the first time the Paw Sox scored since the 2nd inning of game 2 during Sundays doubleheader against the Rochester Red Wings. That was a stretch of 25 consecutive scoreless innings for the Paw Sox.
The Paw Sox were leading the game 3-1 going into the 9th inning. That’s when the Paw Sox brought in Ty Buttrey for the save. Unfortunately, Buttrey didn’t have it tonight. He quickly gave up the lead and eventually let the tying run come in on a bases loaded walk to Pedro Florimon. Buttrey was replaced by Chandler Shepherd who then gave up a bases clearing double to J.P. Crawford. That made it a 6-3 game.
Paw Sox Pen Implodes
With the Paw Sox leading 3-1 going into the 9th inning, they had Ty Buttrey on the mound to close it out. The first batter, Hector Gomez hit a line drive to right field for Bryce Brentz. Unfortunately, Brentz completely missed the ball as it glanced off of his glove. This got the lead off man on for the Iron Pigs.
” [Ty Buttrey had] below average command. There’s going to be times where there are errors behind you, but you still got to keep your wits about you. It looked up the effort level ticked up a [a lot]. Those leverage situations late in the game, he’s a guy who profiles to possibly do that in the future. There’s going to be things that happen behind you, but it looked like he was trying to do a little bit too much on the mound tonight.” said manager Kevin Boles after the game.
It was clear that after the error by Brentz in right field to lead off the inning, Buttrey was rattled. He was unable to handle himself after that and the Iron Pigs exploded for 5 runs. Buttrey needs to be able to handle himself after that and he couldn’t. It was only his 5th outing for AAA Pawtucket since his promotion from AA, but it’s not a good look for him. It’ll be interesting to see how he responds after this.
