Paw Sox Are Shutout 5-0 Behind Strong Performance From Iron Pigs Starter Mark Appel
The Paw Sox lose a tough one at a wet McCoy Stadium on Monday night to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs . The final score was 5-0 in a quick 2 hours and 25 minutes. When the rain came down on McCoy in the 6th inning, it never let up.
The story tonight was the strong pitching performance from the Iron Pigs starter, Mark Appel. The former number 1 overall pick in the draft went 8 1/3 innings tonight, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 8 on 119 pitches (79 strikes).
Surprisingly, the offensive star of the night for the Paw Sox was Allen Craig. After a strikeout in the 2nd inning, he had 3 singles in the 4th, 7th, and 9th inning. Craig wasn’t in the original lineup, but right before the game Steve Selsky was taken out and replaced by Craig.
The Iron Pigs go their offence going early in this one. To lead off the game, Cameron Perkins hit his 6th home run of the season into the flower bed in left field. This was a line drive, hard hit ball that did not get that far off the ground at all.
Then to lead off the 2nd inning, Rhys Hoskins hit his 1st home run of the night into the metal bleachers in right-center field. He did it again in the 7th inning too as he hit a towering home run over the Paw Sox bullpen. Hoskins now leads the league in home runs with 17.
The Iron Pigs really put this game away in the 7th inning. In the 7th inning, the Iron Pigs hit 3 straight singles after the home run by Hoskins. With the Iron Pigs leading 3-0, they hit back to back sacrifice fly’s off the bats of Angelo Mora and Cameron Perkins. This pretty much put it away for the Paw Sox as they now trailed 5-0.
Shawn Haviland, who started for the Paw Sox, was lifted from the game in the 7th after not recording an out. His final pitching line was 6+ innings, giving up 7 hits, 5 runs, 6 strike outs, and gave up 3 home runs on 98 pitches (64 strikes).
Paw Sox Threat
The only offensive threat the Paw Sox had was in the 9th inning. It began with a lead off walk to Brian Bogusevic. Following a strikeout of Sam Travis, Allen Craig had a base hit to right field to put 2 runners on with 1 out. That was the end of the game for Appel. After that, Ricardo Pinto came in for the Iron Pigs and was able to strike out Blake Swihart. Then he got Mike Miller to ground out to 3rd base to end the game.
