Pawtucket Red Sox Place Blake Swihart On DL, Activate Rusney Castillo

On Wednesday, the Pawtucket Red Sox made a flurry of moves, one of them was to set-up a rehab assignment for a Boston Red Sox infielder.

Brock Holt who has had several rehab attempts shut down due to vertigo symptoms is now giving it another go.  With Pawtucket’s third base being platooned by Pablo Sandoval and Jhonny Peralta the PawSox transferred Brock Holt’s rehab to Portland. This move made it so Holt can play third base for the Sea Dogs.

Holt was placed on the 10-day Dl on  April 21st and then he was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 24th. Holt has appeared in 17 games at the minor league level this season in an effort to rehab. Every rehab attempt he has made has resulted in him getting shut down with vertigo symptoms.

Pawtucket reinstated center fielder Rusney Castillo to take Holt’s roster spot. Castillo has been out on the DL with a right groin pull. Castillo has played well for the PawSox this season batting .311 in 238 at-bats with 9 home runs and 28 RBIs.

Despite Castillo coming off the DL, there is a player going on the DL on Wednesday.

Catcher Blake Swihart was also placed on 7-day DL (left ankle inflammation) and Pawtucket in exchange reinstated catcher Tim Roberson from the DL. Swihart has played in 41 games for Pawtucket this season and was batting,213 in 150 at-bats with 3 home runs and 20 RBIs.

Roberson has only played in 8 games for the PawSox this season and is batting .207 in 28 at-bats.

Red Sox Trade OF Bryce Brentz To The Pittsburgh Pirates

The Red Sox have announced that they have traded outfielder Bryce Brentz to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations. This creates a spot for newly signed JD Martinez on the 40 man roster, and ultimately the opening day 25 man roster.

Last season for the Pawtucket Red Sox, Bryce Brentz hit .271 with 31 home runs and 85 RBI’s. Those 31 home runs was the most out of any player in the Red Sox organization. However his fielding was okay at best.

This season, Bryce Brentz was on track to be the number 4 outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. But with the acquisition of JD Martinez, this would force Bryce Brentz off the opening day roster. Since Bryce Brentz no longer has anymore options, this trade makes sure that the Red Sox get something out of getting rid of him. Otherwise the Red Sox would have just designated him for assignment.

Here are some of the highlights from last season for Bryce Brentz.

Boston Red Sox Have Signed JD Martinez

JD Martinez

Time for a celebration Red Sox fans, the team has reportedly signed a big-time bat.

According to Pedro Gomez of ESPN, the Boston Red Sox have signed free agent DH/OF J.D. Martinez.

Multiple outlets are reporting that the deal is for five years with a player opt-out option after two seasons. The deal is valued at $110 million with it being a front loaded contract prior to the opt out. Full terms will be revealed later.

Martinez has played for three teams in his career starting off in Houston, moving to Detroit, and then being traded to Arizona this past season. The 30-year-old has had his fair share of struggles in major league baseball but was able to figure it all out in 2017 by belting 45 home runs between the Tigers and Diamondbacks with a .303 batting average and 104 RBIs.

Martinez’s role with the Red Sox is unclear at the moment but he can be expected to DH and the corner outfield positions. Having the opt-out in the contract is a huge incentive for Martinez who will likely be playing like it is a contract year given the front-loaded nature of the deal.

Boston has landed their guy, the question is will it be enough for them to contend with the New York Yankees?
