Pedro Martinez Poking The Tires On A David Ortiz Return

Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez Poking The Tires On A David Ortiz Return

Former Boston Red Sox Pitcher and Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez is kicking the tires on the return of David Ortiz hopefuls with a tweet claiming Ortiz is in baseball shape and could help the Red Sox at the plate.

The tweet(s) below are ones he sent out last night on the subject, the first being his initial comment, and the second being his backtrack.

The timing of Martinez’s comments are interesting given Ortiz’s appearance  at CC Sabathia’s PITCCH IN Foundation bowling tournament in Times Square the same night as Pedro’s comments. The Ortiz interview happened before Pedro’s comments, but still an interesting timing on Martinez’s part.

Ortiz said nothing to support Pedro’s comments which is consistent with all of his previous interviews ever since he announced his retirement.

“No, not at all man,” Ortiz said when asked if he had any regrets. “I‘m happy.”

On what Ortiz’s role might be with the Boston Red Sox going forward, he says nothing is set in stone yet.

“You will know later,” Ortiz said

When talking about this years Boston Red Sox team, Ortiz was speaking in generalities and seemingly without real opinion.

“They just need to have a hot streak where everybody starts playing well at the same time. The team already has a couple of injuries but I think they’re going to be fine.”

“[Xander] Bogaerts’ power is going to come, Hanley [Ramirez’s] going to start hitting home runs. I think it’s going to happen at some point. Hopefully soon.”

Playoff Chances and Leadership on Team?

“Oh yeah. They’ve got a little bit off everything. That’s what you need to go to the playoffs.”

“They’re fine. When you got a guy like [Dustin] Pedroia, [Rick] Porcello… They know how to handle the business.”

Ortiz’s comeback is unlikely, while Martinez might be right in the sense that Big Papi is in baseball shape, the roster in Boston does not fit for Ortiz right now with Hanley Ramirez‘s inability to play first base right now.

Ortiz walked away on top of his game, not in the championship route many imagined, but if he returns, does it put the Boston Red Sox over the edge?
