Red Sox Report: David Price Defends His Actions

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher David Price met with the media on Saturday. Price had no obligation to do so which is a credit to him for standing in front of the press and answering questions. Of course

Of course, a good amount of the questioning was related to his incident on the team plane with NESN color-man Dennis Eckersley.

While meeting with the media showed he wasn’t going to run away from the questions, his answering may have done more damage than it solved.

The whole incident has left a bad taste in the mouths of the fan base, something that Price is cognitive of.

“That’s kind of the worst part about it. Fans hear what they say. They’re going to believe what they read and what they hear on TV. That’s not us. If Eck was around, he’d know who we are. He’s never in the clubhouse. Mr.Remy is always in here. Dave O’Brien is always around. Mr.Timlin, on the road trip, always in the clubhouse. He’s the one guy I’ve seen in my career that doesn’t show his face in the clubhouse. There’s a reason behind it.”

Bringing up Mike Timlin is an interesting remark considering the former Red Sox pitcher was only with the team for one road trip, the 6 game west coast trip.

When asked if he would have handled the situation differently if he had another opportunity to address the situation. While he admitted a different way might have been a better approach, he wouldn’t back down from it.

“I could have handled it probably in a different way, but ever since that’s happened, he’s been really good. He’s said a lot of positive stuff about everybody in this clubhouse. This is one band, one sound. We’ve got to have everybody on board. That’s that.”

His response implies that is a regular listener of the NESN broadcasts. To the average listener, it is a tad odd with no visible difference in the way Eckersely covers the games.

To conclude his session with the media he made sure to point out that this isn’t the first time a player has had an issue with the Hall of Famer.

“I mean, if you’re going to say what he says, you know, come around. Just show your face. And if guys have a problem with it, they’ll pull him aside. Be like, that ain’t how it’s done. This is not the first time this has happened here regarding Eck. It’s unfortunate that it happened and it did and we’re going to get through it.”

In regards to his injury, Price confirmed John Farrell‘s comments on the injury being less severe than the one in the spring. But he pointed out that he thinks it will be longer than the 10-day-dl that he is on.
