New England Patriots Sign DE Rob Ninkovich To A One Year Contract Extension

The New England Patriots have signed defensive end Rob Ninkovich to a one-year contract extension through 2017, according to a report from Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

Ninkovich, who is currently serving a four-game suspension after a positive test for a banned substance, will now be playing on a two-year deal worth $4.27 million. Fundamentally, New England lowered his base salary, but added a signing bonus which should basically offset any lost money.

The 32-year-old Ninkovich has been a key part of the Patriots’ defense since shortly after he signed as a free agent in 2009. The 6-foot-3, 251-pound edge defender has 42 sacks in seven years with New England.

The Patriots gave Ninkovich $1.5m signing bonus and lowered base salary from$1.5 to $1m this year. The contract restructure saved him about $117k in suspension fines. In addition the Patriots tweaked Ninkovich’s 2016 roster bonuses to allow him to collect the same $400k. Will make $33,333 per game instead of $25k.

With Ninkovich and Freeney signed for next season, the Patriots can now focus their attention on resigning soon to be free agents Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower who are both respectively the best upcoming free agents the Patriots have on their roster.
